Sad news to share...

I took our beloved 13 yr old dog Shelby to the vet yesterday for an exam dur to a nagging, worsening cough.  The chest x-rays shows she has a malignant tumor on her lung.  I went alone to the vet with her and was relatively calm for the diagnosis but a few tears welled up in my eyes as the Dr. told me the news.  Meanwhile, Shelby was walking around, looking at me wagging her tail, oblivious to the terrible news.  I broke down when the Dr. left the room and Shelby was taken away to get her nails clipped.  I talked briefly with a few of the receptionists there, one of the gals Brittany knows all our pets.  She was sad.  I came home and had to break the news to my DMIL - she just hugged me and we both cried.  I waited all day to hear from John (busy day at work) when he finally called on his way home.  He wanted to hear the news - it was so hard to say.  I cried all day, on and off and ended up with a nagging headache.  I tried to take my mind off of it for a while and read Eclipse (Twilight Series) and took a great nap.  Then, I did what I usually do when I'm upset - I cleaned the house.  I only got as far as the kitchen though, but the floor got swept and mopped (it was long overdue) and I baked for the neighbors.

When John finally got home, we spent some time being sad and then took Shelby for a small outing to deliver our goodies to the neighbors.  It was good to have a little visit.  My DMIL was so sweet, she went out to run a few errands and snuck my short grocery list and bought the items on it as well as some 'comfort' food for us which was so thoughtful.  In addition to that, she treated us to Chinese delivery so I didn't have to cook.  Shelby was sent home with some cough suppresants which have been controlling her coughing, we all got a pretty good night's sleep and I was able to get up in the middle of the night to give her pill when it was time - her coughing episodes are usually rougher during the night.

It seems surreal; but I am well aware that animals, just like people, do not live forever.  It's just hard to stomach when someone (regardless of the species) is suffering, although when you look at the video I took of her this morning, you might not guess she has a terminal illness.  It's my intention to cherish the remaining time we have with her, as undetermined as it is, according to Dr. Rafferty.  What I am nost sad about, is that she will not likely move out to our property with us when we have the house built, so I know that moving day will be filled with mixed emotions and I need to prepare myself for it.  Shelby has truly been the most sweet, even tempered, mild mannered precious part of our family and I'm not quite ready for her not following us around the house all day. In fact, as I write this, she put her head up and looked at me with her sweet, loving eyes.  It just breaks my heart to think of the days I will not have that.

My heart goes out to you and your family! I know how difficult it is to lose someone you love so much. You brought back memories of times when we lost a loved one. Please know that our prayers are with you and yours at this time. There will be a reunion in the bye and bye.

*hugs* Donna, I'm so sorry. Pets are family too and I know there must be a huge hole in your heart right now.

Enjoy her as long as she isn't in pain. This is one of the hardest things in life - to lose a house dog. They are like little children and need to be taken care of, always glad to see you, and great companions. My last one died 14 years ago and I'm getting sad now. My sympathy.

I'm so sorry. My fuzzy buddy was my siamese tabby and I miss him everyday. After having him so many years, it's hard to say good bye to someone you love so much. Sending you hugs and best wishes.

Hi Donna. I'm so sorry to hear about Shelby. My heart breaks for you. I've been there and it's not a easy road you are about to go on. Sending a big hug to all of you. I don't know what I would do without my furbabies. They bring so much love and happiness into out lives. Take care.

Dear Donna -

Several years ago, my German Shepherd, Conan, started coughing. I took him to the vet and they decided to keep him for the day to do some tests. When the vet called me, my heart broke. My sweet boy had lung cancer. I was stunned, none of us smoked. I brought him home, and they gave us medicine for him which helped. Saddly, 3 months later we lost him. To this day, we still miss him tremendously, he was our child as much as our son was.
It took us quite a few years to even think about getting another dog. Now we have 2 of them. I love them to pieces, and I treasure each day I have them.
Give Shelby all the love you can lavish on her, take photos and videos of her, these will help you when she is no longer physically with you. She will always be in your hearts though. She is such a sweet looking puppy. My heart goes out to you and I will keep you in my prayers.

We just put our furry family member to "sleep" two wks ago when she suffered a stroke. It happened so fast, but the decision was bitter sweet, yet I think God held my heart close to him so it wouldn't be as painful. It's quiet now and the need to take care of her is in His hands and we will meet again.

Hi Donna, so sorry to hear about Shelby. I can't imagine having such a special friend for such a long time and then know that they are ill...animals really are not any different than us! The grief is still the same but so to is the healing process **hugs**

Oh Donna, I am so, so sorry to hear about sweet Shelby.

Even though we 'know' that our beloved pets (our other children) don't live forever, yet they do become an important part of the family and it's just as hard to hear bad news like that.

We had to put down our 13 y/o doxie Amy a year ago...it was hard and we miss her still.....

Sending lots of Cyber-hugs and love your way hun today! xoxo

I am so sorry to hear about Shelby and know it is heartbreaking. As you said we all know the day has to come but it doesn't make it any easier. Be good to yourself and take care - that is, I am sure, what Shelby wants! Blessings to Shelby and your family.

We lost our pup in March and just rescued a new one 2 weeks ago. 13 years is a good long life...you blessed her with love and goodness. Enjoy your time with her in these precious days and do what you can to keep her comfortable.

Donna,

I am so sorry to hear the sad news about Shelby. It is so hard when you hear such bad news about a family member, and I am sure that is what you consider Shelby. I hope that her days with you are filled with fun, love and adventure, and create more wondeful memories.

Blessings,

Dear Donna,
I'm so, so sorry for your sad news and what lies ahead for you. I'm bawling right now b/c I remember that fateful day not long ago when our vet gave us the same news about our sweet sweet Maxie. It's so hard to believe that there will be a future w/o her next to you wagging and smiling up at you. You have given her such a good long happy life. You will meet again some day, she'll be waiting for you wagging her whole body. Until then, enjoy and cherish every moment. Give her all the treats she wants, spoil her like never before, and don't feel silly for grieving.

Dear Donna,
I'm so sorry to hear about Shelby's diagnosis. Being a dog lover as well, it's extra hard to know you are having to go through this. Treasure your time with her, as I know you are, and know that when the time comes for her to cross the Rainbow Bridge, she'll continue to watch over you. Cindy

Hi Donna: I was just catching on the GinaK news and was browsing your posts. I am so sorry to hear about Shelby. Pets become so much part of the family. They love us so unconditionally. I lost my very first pet this past March. We got him from a shelter and he was the best dog ever. Take the opportunity to spend time with her as much as possible and make some more memories. I am sure her spirit will be with you when you move into your new house. My thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.

** HUGS **
Alma =)
